The Decision to Put My Third Novel on Hiatus

The title alone speaks for itself as to what this post is about, and to be quite frank, this has not been an easy decision for me to make.

Since my update about my third novel from back in January, I unfortunately still haven’t made a lot of progress with writing it. My most recent update on it is that I’ve managed to hammer out a fairly long chapter in it – and by recent, I mean that this was a little over a month ago.

It’s been a year and a half since I first started work on this novel, and this month will be a year since I’ve actually started writing it. While I previously thought that it was because I was subconsciously thrown off by the qualities that make it different from my previous works, I’m now realizing that that may not be the case at all.

I’ve come to conclusion that I might not be in the right headspace to take on this novel right now, for some reason or another. While that might sound bad, this actually isn’t the first time for me. Remember that of the first two novels of mine, the idea for An Absolute Mind came first, but A Moment’s Worth was pursued first. I didn’t like what I had plot-wise for An Absolute Mind initially, which is why I set it aside until I felt good and ready.

Which is why now, I’m going to do the same for the third novel. I’m going to take a break from it for a while, until I feel ready to really make it as badass of a novel it can be. I don’t know for how long it will be on hiatus. It may be quite some time. And while I know I have preached about finishing what you’ve started, I realize now that it’s also just as wise to take a break from something if it isn’t working out as well as it could be in that time.

In case you’re wondering, no, I’m not going to sit back and not write. This break from the third novel actually frees up a lot of time for me to pursue a big endeavor of mine. While I’ve mentioned it to a few people already and also briefly in an Instagram livestream from last month, I am working on my first feature-length screenplay. I’ve been working on it for a few months now and aside from a few delays in time spent with it, it’s going pretty well.

One of my goals in life is to become a screenwriter, and I’m starting to make that happen this year in several ways. Writing a movie is one of the ways I’m starting to make this goal of mine a reality. With this screenplay, I’m aiming to have it written up and ready to submit to fellowships, film festivals, and screenplay competitions in the coming year. While I will not say what it is about at this time, just know that it’s a story that I strongly believe is needed for these trying times.

So I’ll still be writing, I’ll still be promoting my two novels that are already out there, and while my third novel is on hiatus, I’ll strategize every so often as to how to go about it when the time comes to work on it again.

An Absolute Mind is now available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & NobleCreateSpace, iBooks, Kobo, Smashwords, etc. If you read it, please leave a review, for they’re greatly appreciated, they help me grow as a writer, and they help with getting other people to find out about it. Also, be sure to check out its Goodreads page, and feel free to leave any questions you have about the book.

Also, if you are able to, I hope you can go support me in all that I do by leaving a tip over on Ko-fi. I do a lot of writing that I get paid very little for or not at all, and so this is a way of showing your support other than just reading my content. Donations of varying quantities and frequencies are greatly appreciated.
