Ever since I made the decision several years ago to start taking my writing more seriously, I’ve managed to have written quite a number of projects since then. I’ve written novels, short fiction, plays, films, and the occasional poem or two. However, there is still so much more that I have not written that I would like to try my hand at eventually, and a lot of those mediums are collaborative. As I’ve been told time and time again, the first step to making something happen is by putting it out into the universe. Therefore, I would like to take today to run through five things I have not written, but would like to someday:
- Comics/Graphic Novels
I have never written a comic or a graphic novel before. The partnership between writer and artist is strong with this kind of project, and to have that experience to work one-on-one with someone on something like this would be good for me. Also, while I’m not someone who grew up reading comics and graphic novels, in adulthood, I have come into having a couple of favorite series such as that of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “Trese.” So this is something I definitely want to explore as a writer eventually.
2. Animation
I love animation! This medium of storytelling, while often looked at as just for kids in countries such as my own, really make way for possibilities in storytelling that are oftentimes impossible to do in other mediums and forms such as live-action. I’m already a screenwriter, and so while it might be easy for me to say that writing for animation would be a no-brainer, I know that there are differences between writing for these two very distinct forms. Animation is more specific in how the characters move, their facial expressions, what the settings look like, etc. If I can learn that level of specificity when writing a screenplay to be animated, maybe there’s hope for me to try writing something for this medium eventually.
3. Music Video Treatments
Music videos have really come a long way within the last four decades. From the moment MTV launched way back when, it became sort of an incentive for all music artists to have a visual to accompany some of – if not all – of the songs on their respective albums. They’ve truly come to be an art form all on their own. I especially love it whenever a music video tells a distinct story. I think if the opportunity ever comes across my radar, I would love to try my hand at writing a treatment for a music video.
4. Songs
I’m aware of just how personal writing can be when you’re bringing something of yourself into it, and I know that that is definitely the case for music artists who write their own songs. Maybe that’s why as a non-music artist, fulfilling this goal of mine has always felt a little bit out of reach for me. But that’s not to say it’s impossible either, especially if said music artist was open to a collaboration. It already feels like such an out-of-body experience whenever a stage play or screenplay of mine is produced, as I hear the words that I wrote be recited out loud by someone. Imagine what it would be like if those words came in the form of a song. Besides, as I mentioned earlier, I have experience with writing poetry. To take on writing a song would be like upping the ante for me.
5. Fiction Podcasts
I’m someone who listens to a wide variety of podcasts; ranging from docu-series, interviews, and even philosophical discussions. But I think it’s fair to say that fiction podcasts are of a particular interest of mine, as I circle back each week or so and hear how the story is progressing in the latest episode. Similar to writing for animation, I’m well aware that writing for a podcast is not the same as whipping out a screenplay, especially when the medium is all auditory. However, I know that I’m willing to learn, and if ever possible, I would love to write for a fiction podcast.
These are types of projects that I have not written yet, but would like to try my hand at someday. Aside from them all being collaborative efforts, these are also types of writings that I would need to learn how to write in their respective formats. But I know that once I overcome that obstacle, everything else should come to me as I have been with all the other writing I’ve been doing the past several years.
If anyone out there who is reading this and is interested in collaborating with me on any of these types of projects, please let me know. I’m all ears and I’m determined to learn.
If you are able to, I hope you can go support me in all that I do by leaving a tip over on Ko-fi. I do a lot of writing that I get paid very little for or not at all, and so this is a way of showing your support other than just reading my content. Donations of varying quantities and frequencies are greatly appreciated.
