I’ve been mentioning for a while now that there’s a writing project that’s been taking up quite a bit of time as of late, and if you follow me on social media, then you know that I finally revealed just what that is within the last week. However, for those who don’t, here’s what’s up:
I’m writing a graphic novel!
Yes! After starting to dip my foot into the world of comics and graphic novels earlier this year, I’m finally going all in as the writer of one. It’s called Dasig, and it tells the story of a young warrior-in-training who’s struggling to focus on her pursuits when invaders from an unknown land threaten to take over.
I was brought on to write for this project by Kristian Kabuay; a multi-disciplinary artist from the San Francisco Bay Area best known for specializing in pre-colonial Filipino scriptwriting. He and I developed the story being told together. Artwork will be done by Ponsi Alfonso, with Jacob Ira and Joe Aquilizan of Bayani Art as our martial arts and cultural consultants respectively.
I’m not really in the position to say anymore about it at the moment, especially since it is a work-in-progress. The reason why we’re announcing it this early is to make people aware of it ahead of our Kickstarter campaign we’ll be having for it, which launches on Tuesday, July 12th. So definitely keep an eye out for that, and if you’re in a position to do so, we’d love your support.
I’m really excited to have a role in this project. This is my first time writing a graphic novel and Dasig will also be the first book I have authored in nearly six years. I really thought it would be a while before I would find myself in the latter position again, and the fact that Kristian is taking a chance on me by having me write for a medium I’ve never done before means a lot.
I’ll be sure to speak more about Dasig overtime. For now, just know that this is happening. For further updates on the project, be sure to sign up over on the graphic novel’s official website.
