Reality Can Be Beautiful Too!

We escape into fiction- in the forms of books, TV shows and movies- to escape reality.  We escape into fiction sometimes, for the sake of searching for something greater that may seem impossible to find otherwise in this really real world of ours.  But sometimes, that’s not always necessary. The Not-So Serious of Beings

I think one experience I’ve learned from the readings and writing that I’ve done throughout the past year is that as a writer, you cannot take everything you jot down be purposefully serious.  I don’t mean in the matters of tone, but in the matters of meaning.  Fiction writers alone cannot be taken as the most serious of humans, especially due to the fact that already, we spend days writing about events that either may have been altered from real life scenarios, or may have never happened- or can’t happen- at all. Living the Hill-Hopper College Life

The other day in one of the classes I’m taking this quarter for my major, my professor came in, asking how we’re doing.  Being sleepy and not fully awake as we were (including me), not a lot of us answered.  So then one thing led to another, and then he was then asking us if we actually wanted to be here in college.  I kid you not, there was one student who actually went on to say how she’d rather be working but that the only reason why she was enrolled in college was to get a degree and therefore enhance her career opportunities once she graduates.  Needless to say, my professor wasn’t too thrilled to hear this, pointing out how a degree isn’t always necessary to have a successful career. It’s All About Strength

Several months back while running through my Facebook feed, I recall coming across quite an interesting quote that I’ve since inked into one of my quote books.  It’s a quote by psychologist Laurie Helgoe.  She says: “Isn’t it refreshing to know that what comes perfectly natural for you is your greatest strength?  Your power is in your nature.  You may not think it’s a big deal that you can spend hours immersed in something that interests you- alone- but the extrovert next door has no idea how you do it.” Continue reading “It’s All About Strength”

From One Reality to Another (a.k.a. When My Mind is High on Murakami Fiction)

There were several moments this week where I found myself wanting to escape- not literally escape (or maybe so) but to mentally escape; to relieve myself of the then present situation engrained in this hardcore reality and float off into another.  That’s what college work does to you and that’s also what happens when a Haruki Murakami novel is distracting you with the unusual. Influences and Non-Influences of the Suburbs and Establishing a Mentality

Maybe it’s wisest to make a point of saying that I was born and raised in the suburbs, so I’m accustomed to the semi-small town feel with knowing people who know everyone else and how we’re close without being squashed together in a physical kind of way.  And no, I did not grow up behind the protection of a white picket fence.  It’s not that kind of suburbia.
